Tango grew in the late 1800s in the port neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Its roots include the Cuban habanera — a dotted, lilting bass rhythm — and the candombe drums of Afro-Uruguayans.
The marcato tango beat leans on all four beats with a drag into the next bar; milonga is tango's faster, playful cousin in a 3+3+2 feel; and candombe, from Montevideo's Afro-Uruguayan communities, is played by drum lines of three sizes over a clave-like pattern on the drum's shell.
