Irish and Scottish dance tunes come in a few classic types, each with its own rhythm: the reel in a fast, even 4/4; the jig in 6/8, counted in two groups of three; the slip jig in 9/8; and the hornpipe, a swung 4/4 with a dotted lilt.
In traditional sessions the rhythm is carried by the bodhrán, a frame drum played with a double-ended stick, and here the floor tom stands in for it — accented on the beat with lighter strokes between.
