Latin drum beats — Latin America

Latin dance music is built around a cowbell, congas and a bass line that often skips the downbeat. Cha-cha-chá came out of Havana in the early 1950s with its famous "cha-cha" on beat 4; salsa grew in New York in the 1960s and '70s from Cuban son, locked to the two-bar clave.

Further afield, cumbia began on Colombia's Caribbean coast and spread across the Americas with its shuffling guacharaca; bolero is the slow romantic dance of Cuba and Mexico; and merengue, from the Dominican Republic, is driven by the tambora and the güira's steady scrape. These beats play on the Latin percussion kit: congas, cowbell, bongo and maracas.
