Taiko are Japanese drums, played for centuries at festivals, temples and the court. The modern ensemble style (kumi-daiko) began in the 1950s, and its rhythms are taught by kuchi shōga — spoken syllables like don (a center stroke), doko (two quick strokes) and ka (the rim).
Matsuri rhythms are festival patterns; yatai bayashi, from the Chichibu night festival, is a fast, relentless pattern played sitting low behind the drum; and ondo is the swung rhythm of bon odori, the summer dances for the ancestors. Here the floor and toms play the taiko and the rimshot plays ka.
