Flamenco comes from Andalusia in southern Spain, shaped by Romani, Andalusian and North African traditions. Its rhythm (compás) is kept by palmas (handclaps) and, since the 1970s, the cajón, and many forms count in cycles of 12 beats with accents in unexpected places.
Bulerías accents 12, 3, 6, 8 and 10; tangos is a flamenco form in 4 (unrelated to Argentine tango); sevillanas is the 3/4 dance of Seville's April fair; and rumba flamenca is the upbeat, Cuban-tinged party style. Here the rimshot plays the palmas and the kick and snare play the cajón.
