Caribbean drum beats — The Caribbean

Calypso came from Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1900s, a storytelling song style riding a lilting, syncopated kick. In the 1970s it sped up into soca ("the soul of calypso"), the driving four-on-the-floor sound of Carnival.

Zouk is from Guadeloupe and Martinique, a 1980s dance music with a skipping 3-3-2 kick, and kompa (konpa) is Haiti's national dance music, smooth and mid-tempo, built on a steady cymbal and a rolling kick. Reggae and ska, from Jamaica, have their own page.
