Brazilian drum beats — Brazil

Brazil's rhythms come from the meeting of West African drumming, Portuguese song and Indigenous music. Samba grew up in Rio de Janeiro's neighborhoods in the early 1900s and became the sound of Carnival: a deep surdo answering on beat 2, a shaker or tamborim running sixteenths, and syncopated rim patterns like the partido alto on top.

Bossa nova took samba's feel and made it quiet and close in late-1950s Rio — a cross-stick clave over a soft, dotted kick. From Brazil's northeast, baião has a lopsided kick that drives forró dancing, and samba-reggae, born in Salvador in the 1980s, fuses Bahian drum corps with reggae.
