Balkan dance music is famous for meters that group short and long beats: rachenitsa is 7/8 counted 2+2+3, lesnoto 7/8 counted 3+2+2. Dancers feel the long beat as a lift, and the drum (tapan) marks each group with a heavy stroke. Played here with each beat as an eighth note, so the tempo is the eighth-note pulse.
Čoček is the Romani brass-band dance of Serbia and North Macedonia; the bulgar is the Klezmer (Eastern European Jewish) dance beat with a 3+3+2 snare; and the polka, from Bohemia in the 1830s, is a quick two-beat oom-pah that spread through Central Europe and the Americas.
