Turn your words into music
Every sentence has a rhythm. Hear yours as a drum beat with TextyBeat, or as a whole song with TextySong — then open it in the RockBlocks editor, share the link or save it to your library.
Type some words first.
A word counter without the clutter
Most free word counters pay for themselves with banner ads, auto-playing videos and pop-ups that jump around while you type. This one doesn't. It's made by RockBlocks, a free music app, so there's nothing to sell you: just a fast, clean counter that works on your phone and your laptop, and a fun extra at the end.
What it counts
- Words
- Runs of letters or numbers. “It's”, “well-known”, “3.5” and “1,000” each count as one word, the way word processors count them.
- Characters
- Every letter, number, space, punctuation mark and emoji — plus a count without spaces and line breaks.
- Sentences and paragraphs
- Sentences end with a period, question mark, exclamation point or ellipsis. Each non-empty line is a paragraph.
- Reading and speaking time
- Reading time at 238 words per minute (the adult average for non-fiction); speaking time at 150 words per minute, a typical speech pace.

Every sentence has a rhythm
Your writing already has a beat: the way the syllables fall, where the stresses land, how long each sentence runs. RockBlocks turns that into real music, free and with no sign-up.
- TextyBeat turns each sentence into its own drum groove and plays them in order. Pick a drum kit and tempo, make a video for TikTok or Reels, and share the link.
- TextySong turns your words into a whole song — drums, a bass line, a hook, a melody and a song structure — with a music video to match.
- The RockBlocks drum machine is where either one goes next: open your beat in the editor, change any hit, build it into a full song and save it to your free library.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text. Type or paste an essay, post, speech, poem or any writing into the box. Nothing is uploaded; counting happens in your browser.
- Read your counts. Words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and speaking time update live with every keystroke.
- Check character limits. Open the character limits panel to see how many characters you have left for an X post, Instagram caption, TikTok caption, text message, search result title or meta description.
- Turn your words into music (optional). Press Make a beat to hear your sentences as a drum beat with TextyBeat, or Make a song to turn them into a whole song with TextySong. Open the result in the RockBlocks editor, share its link or save it to your library.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this word counter really free with no ads?
- Yes. The RockBlocks word counter is completely free, shows no ads, no pop-ups and no cookie walls, and needs no account. It's part of RockBlocks, a free music app, and exists to be a clean, fast tool, with an optional way to turn your writing into music.
- Is my text private?
- Yes. Your text is counted in your browser and never uploaded. A draft is kept only on your own device so it's still there when you come back. Your words only leave the page if you choose to turn them into a beat or song and share the link.
- How does it count words?
- A word is a run of letters or numbers. Contractions (it's), hyphenated words (well-known) and numbers with a decimal point or comma (3.5, 1,000) each count as one word. Punctuation and emoji on their own don't count as words. This matches how most word processors count.
- How is reading time calculated?
- Reading time assumes an average silent-reading speed of 238 words per minute, the average for adults reading non-fiction in English. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, a typical pace for a speech or presentation.
- How many pages is 500 words?
- About 1 page single-spaced or 2 pages double-spaced, in a 12-point font with 1-inch margins. 1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced.
- How long does it take to give a 1,000-word speech?
- About 6 to 7 minutes at a typical speaking pace of 150 words per minute. A 500-word speech takes about 3 to 4 minutes.
- Does it count characters with and without spaces?
- Yes, both. Characters counts every letter, number, space, punctuation mark and emoji. Characters without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- What's the character limit for X, Instagram and TikTok?
- A standard post on X is 280 characters, an Instagram caption is 2,200, a TikTok caption is 4,000, a LinkedIn post is 3,000, a Bluesky post is 300 and a Threads post is 500. A single SMS text message is 160 characters. The counter checks all of these live.
- How do I turn my words into music?
- After typing, press Make a beat to hear each sentence as its own drum groove with TextyBeat, or Make a song to get a whole song with drums, bass, a hook, a melody and a music video from TextySong. It works from your first 280 characters. You can open the beat in the RockBlocks drum machine, share a link to it, or save it to your free RockBlocks library.
