Practice with drums

Swap the click for a real drum groove at the same tempo and meter — it fits any number of beats, odd meters too. Pick triplets or swing eighths above and the grooves swing to match. Want to write your own, with fills and a whole song? Build drum loops →

Dynamics

Practice a riff getting louder or softer: the click and drums swell or fade across the bars, then start again.

Speed trainer

Build speed the way teachers do: start where it's clean and let the tempo climb a little every few bars.

Turn it into a beat

Your click in 4/4 at 70 bpm, as drums: strong beats on the kick, accents on the snare, every click on the hi-hat. Open it in the drum machine to change any hit, build a song around it and save it.

A metronome without the clutter

Search for a metronome and the top results bury the click under banner ads and videos that start playing on their own — the last thing you want in the middle of practice. This one is just the metronome. It's made by RockBlocks, a free app for learning and making drum beats, so there's nothing to sell you. Bookmark it, and send students a link with the exact tempo and meter to practice.

How to practice with a metronome

  • Start slow.Pick a tempo where you can play the passage cleanly three times in a row, even if that's half speed.
  • Climb in small steps. Add about 5 BPM once it feels easy. The speed trainer can do this for you every few bars.
  • Subdivide.Turn on eighths or sixteenths to hear the space between beats — it's where timing drifts.
  • Move the click.Make beats 1 and 3 silent so the click falls only on 2 and 4, the way a drummer's backbeat does, and your own time has to carry the rest.
  • Practice dynamics. Turn on a crescendo or swell and play your riff growing and fading with it. Control at every volume is what makes a part sound musical.
  • Play with a groove. Practicing a song? Switch on a drum groove in its style — playing with drums feels like playing with a band.

Drum grooves in any meter

Instead of a click, practice along with one of 13 real drum grooves — they stretch to any meter, so a rock beat in 7/4 or a shuffle in 5/4 just works:

  • · Rock / pop
  • · Punk rock
  • · Metal (double bass)
  • · Four on the floor (house, disco, techno)
  • · Boom bap (hip-hop)
  • · Funk
  • · Dembow (reggaeton)
  • · Half-time (trap, dubstep)
  • · Two-step (drum and bass)
  • · Shuffle (blues)
  • · Swing
  • · Jazz ride
  • · One drop (reggae)

When you're done, Open in the RockBlocks editor turns the groove — or the click itself — into a real drum beat in the RockBlocks drum machine, where you can change any hit, build a song and save it to your free library. New to drums? Drum School has 100 free lessons.

How to use it

  1. Set the tempo. Drag the slider, use the + and − buttons or the arrow keys, or press Tap (or T) in time with the music to set the beats per minute.
  2. Choose the meter and accents. Pick a time signature like 4/4, 3/4, 5/4 or 7/4, or add and remove beats. Tap any beat to change it between strong accent, accent, normal and silent. Add up to three more bars in other meters to practice a changing meter.
  3. Pick a subdivision and sound. Choose quarter notes, eighths, triplets, sixteenths, swing eighths, quintuplets, sextuplets or septuplets, and a click, woodblock, beep or rimshot sound.
  4. Press Start. Press Start or the space bar. The lit beat follows what you hear, and the screen stays awake while it plays.
  5. Practice with drums, dynamics or the speed trainer (optional). Switch to a drum groove (rock, punk, metal, funk, hip-hop, reggaeton, swing, jazz and more), turn on dynamics to practice a crescendo, decrescendo or swell, or turn on the speed trainer to raise the tempo a few BPM every few bars.

Frequently asked questions

Is this metronome free with no ads?
Yes. The RockBlocks metronome is free, with no ads, no autoplay video, no pop-ups and no account. It's made by RockBlocks, a free music app for learning and making drum beats.
How do I use tap tempo?
Press the Tap button, or the T key, in time with the music. After two taps the metronome sets itself to your tempo, and each extra tap makes the reading more accurate. Stop for two seconds and the next tap starts a fresh count.
What tempo should I practice at?
Start at a tempo where you can play the passage cleanly every time, often 60 to 80 BPM, then raise it by about 5 BPM once it feels easy. The speed trainer does this for you: it adds a few BPM every few bars until it reaches your goal tempo.
What is a subdivision?
A subdivision splits each beat into smaller, even parts: eighths are two clicks per beat, triplets three, sixteenths four, quintuplets five, sextuplets six and septuplets seven. The extra clicks are quieter than the beat, so you can feel the pulse and keep your timing even between beats. Swing eighths play the first and third note of a triplet, long-short, and make the drum grooves swing too.
How do I set the metronome to 6/8 or 7/8?
6/8, 7/8 and 12/8 are like 6/4, 7/4 and 12/4, but the eighth note gets the beat instead of the quarter note. Choose 6/4, 7/4 or 12/4 and set the tempo to the eighth-note pulse; the accents already group 6 as 3+3 and 7 as 2+2+3, and you can tap any beat to move them. For a 6/8 or 12/8 that's felt in big beats, use 2/4 or 4/4 with triplets.
Can the metronome change meter, like 4/4 then 3/4?
Yes. Add up to four bars, each in its own meter with its own accents (for example 4/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4), and the metronome or drum groove plays them in order, over and over.
Can a metronome help me practice crescendos and decrescendos?
Yes. Turn on Dynamics and choose a crescendo (getting louder), a decrescendo (getting softer) or a swell (both), the dynamic marks to go between (pp to ff) and over how many bars. The click, the drums or both follow it, so you can practice playing a riff with the same rise and fall.
What is the speed trainer?
The speed trainer raises the tempo automatically while you play: choose how many BPM to add, how many bars between steps and a goal tempo. It can also slow down, if the goal is lower than the starting tempo.
Can I practice with drums instead of a click?
Yes. Switch to Drum groove to play along with a real drum beat at the same tempo and meter: rock and pop, punk rock, metal with double bass, four on the floor, boom bap hip-hop, funk, reggaeton dembow, half-time trap, drum and bass, blues shuffle, swing, jazz ride or reggae one drop, on any of RockBlocks' drum kits. Grooves fit any number of beats, odd meters too.
Can I share a metronome setting with my students?
Yes. Everything you set (tempo, meters, accents, subdivision, sound, groove, dynamics and speed trainer) is saved in the page's link. Press Share, or copy the address, and whoever opens it gets the same setup.
How accurate is an online metronome?
This one schedules every click ahead of time on the browser's audio clock (Web Audio), so clicks land exactly on time even if the page is busy, rather than relying on JavaScript timers, which drift. It works in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
Can I turn the metronome into a drum beat?
Yes. Open in the RockBlocks editor turns the click or groove into a real drum beat, with strong beats on the kick, accents on the snare and every click on the hi-hat, that you can change hit by hit, build into a song and save to your free library.
