Take it to RockBlocks

Each loop becomes a beat in the RockBlocks drum machine (loop A in slot A, and so on) and your song becomes a Stacks arrangement — where you can add a bass line, change any hit, and save it.

Practice with a drummer, not a click

A metronome keeps time; a drummer gives you a groove to lock into. Bass players can lock the kick, guitarists can sit in the pocket of a backbeat, and singers can hear where the song breathes. Build a verse loop, a chorus loop and a fill, string them into the song's form, and run it as many times as you need — at half speed while you learn it, then up to tempo. Want just a click? The free metronome has the same grooves, plus a speed trainer and dynamics.

From any loop, RockBlocks can make a variation, a fill, or a bar of drum solo that fits it — the "answer" bar and the fill into the chorus, without having to write them step by step.

How to use it

  1. Pick a beat from the library. Choose a genre, like Rock, Hip-hop, Brazilian or Surf, and press one of its beats: it loads into the loop you're on and starts playing, at its usual tempo. Each genre has four to six beats to choose from.
  2. Edit the grid. Make it yours: choose Hit, Accent or Ghost and press steps on the grid to paint them; drag along a row to paint several, press a painted step to clear it. Set 3 to 8 beats and sixteenths or triplets, add drums, and mute, solo or turn down any row.
  3. Set the tempo and feel. Type a tempo, use + and −, or tap it. Turn on swing, a click on every beat, or a one-bar count-in to come in on.
  4. Build a song. Add loops to the song with how many times each repeats, like A ×4, B ×1, A ×3, C ×1, and press Song to play it through.
  5. Play along, share or open it in RockBlocks. Press Play (or the space bar) and practice with it. Share the link with your band, or open it in the RockBlocks editor, where each loop is a beat and the song is a Stacks arrangement you can save.

Frequently asked questions

Is this drum loop maker free with no ads?
Yes. It's free, with no ads, no pop-ups and no sign-up needed. A free account adds loops E to H (eight loops instead of four) and saving to your RockBlocks library.
Can I use it as a practice drum machine for guitar or bass?
Yes, that's what it's built for. Pick a groove in your song's style, set the tempo, turn on a count-in, and loop it while you play. Build a verse loop, a chorus loop and a fill, string them into a song, and practice the whole form with a drummer that never rushes.
What drum beats does it come with?
Over 150 named beats in 33 genres: rock, pop, punk, metal, blues, funk, soul and Motown, R&B, hip-hop, trap, reggae and ska, reggaeton, Latin (cha-cha-chá, son clave, cumbia, bolero, merengue), Brazilian (bossa nova, samba, baião, partido alto), surf, country, jazz, disco, house and techno, drum and bass, Afrobeat and Afrobeats, odd time and 3/4, and world music: Afro-Cuban (son montuno, songo, Mozambique, guaguancó, bembé), Caribbean (calypso, soca, zouk, kompa), West African (kpanlogo, djole, Ewe 12/8, soukous, mbalax), Middle Eastern (maqsum, saidi, baladi, malfuf, ayoub), Indian (kehrwa, dadra, rupak, bhangra), Japanese taiko, Balkan and Klezmer (rachenitsa and lesnoto in 7/8, čoček, bulgar, polka), tango and Argentine (habanera, tango, milonga, candombe), Celtic (reel, jig, hornpipe, slip jig), flamenco (rumba, tangos, sevillanas, bulerías) and world polyrhythms (3 against 2, 4 against 3, 3 against 4, 5 against 4, 12/8 cross-rhythm). Each genre has four to six beats to start from, like a basic rock beat, a half-time beat and a floor-tom groove for rock, or a bossa nova, samba, baião and partido alto for Brazilian. Every beat can be edited step by step.
How do I make a drum fill?
Pick an empty loop and start it from "A fill made from loop A" (or any loop). RockBlocks writes a fill that fits the groove; you can make a variation or a bar of drum solo the same way, then edit any step.
Can I make loops in odd time signatures or with triplets?
Yes. Each loop can be 3 to 8 beats long (3/4, 5/4, 7/4 and so on) and use sixteenths or triplets. Swing turns sixteenth-note loops into a swung, triplet feel.
How many loops can I make?
Four (A to D) without an account, and eight (A to H) with a free one. A song can have up to 16 steps, each repeating a loop up to 16 times.
Can I download my drum loops as MP3 or MIDI?
Yes, with a free account: download the whole song or one loop as an MP3 to play along with anywhere, or as a MIDI file to drop the drums into a DAW like GarageBand, Logic, Ableton or FL Studio. Each loop keeps its own drum kit in the MP3.
Can I share my drum loops?
Yes. Every loop, the song, the tempo, kit and swing are saved in the page's link. Press Share, or copy the address, and whoever opens it hears exactly what you made.
Can I edit my loops in RockBlocks?
Yes. Open in the RockBlocks editor puts each loop in its own slot (loop A in slot A, and so on) and your song in Stacks, RockBlocks' song arranger, where you can add a bass line, change any hit and save it to your free library. Stacks songs run up to three minutes.
Will it keep time if my computer is busy?
Yes. Every hit is scheduled ahead on the browser's audio clock (Web Audio), so the groove stays steady even when the page is busy. Changes you make while it plays come in on the next step.
