About RockReading

RockReading is a free, interactive reading game for kids in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2, where every right answer earns a beat block of a real drum beat. Each lesson is eight quick reading games — finding letters, hearing first sounds, drumming the syllables in a word, spotting rhymes, blending sounds into words, filling in missing sounds, finding sight words, reading words and short stories, and building sentences — and the eight blocks add up to a whole two-measure 4/4 beat in a different style each time (rock, disco, hip-hop, funk, one drop, marching band). Every question is read aloud, pictures stand in for words a child can't read yet, and a wrong answer just means try again, so pre-readers can play on their own. Each grade's path follows the Common Core foundational reading skills (RF.K-2): letters and sounds in Kindergarten; digraphs, magic e, blends, vowel teams and first stories in Grade 1; and r-controlled vowels, compound words, prefixes and suffixes, contractions, synonyms, irregular plurals and past tense, and story comprehension in Grade 2. It runs in a web browser with no download, works without an account, and signing in saves stars on every device.

How to play

  1. 1.Pick a grade and a lesson. Choose Kindergarten, Grade 1 or Grade 2, then start with the lesson marked Next up — each grade's tour builds one skill at a time.
  2. 2.Listen to Rex. Rex the dinosaur reads every question aloud. Tap the speaker to hear it again, or the turtle for a slow hint.
  3. 3.Answer to earn a beat block. Each right answer drops one beat block into a two-measure track and plays the beat so far. A wrong answer just means try again.
  4. 4.Finish the beat. Eight answers make a whole drum beat. Get them all on the first try for three stars, then open your beat in the RockBlocks drum machine.

Frequently asked questions

What is RockReading?
RockReading is a free reading game for kids built into RockBlocks. Each lesson is eight short reading activities, and every right answer earns one beat block — so finishing a lesson builds a whole two-measure drum beat you can play, remix, and save.
What does the Kindergarten path teach?
Fourteen lessons that follow the Kindergarten foundational reading standards: letter names (big and little letters), first sounds for common letters, counting syllables by drumming them, rhyming words, blending sounds into short words, sight words like the, see, can and like, reading short-vowel words, and building simple sentences, ending with a mixed review.
What do the Grade 1 and Grade 2 paths teach?
Grade 1 has twelve lessons on consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th), magic e, blends, the endings -s, -ed and -ing, long-vowel teams (ee, ea, ai, oa, ow, igh), two-syllable words, first-grade sight words, short stories with questions, and asking and telling sentences. Grade 2 has twelve lessons on r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er, ir, ur), the vowel teams oo, ou, ow, oi and oy, compound words, the prefixes un- and re- and suffixes -ful and -less, contractions, synonyms and antonyms, irregular plurals and past tense, two-syllable words, and story detective questions. Each grade ends with a mixed review.
Can my child play if they can't read yet?
Yes. Every question is read aloud, picture choices use emoji instead of words, the speaker button repeats the question, and hint buttons sound words out slowly. A wrong answer is never a dead end — it explains the choice and lets the child try again.
How are stars earned?
Finishing a lesson always earns one star. Getting at least six of the eight questions right on the first try earns two, and all eight earns three. Lessons can be replayed any time to earn more.
Is RockReading free, and does it need an account?
It's free and works without an account. Progress is saved in the browser, and signing in keeps stars on every device.
