This is lesson 4 of 100 in RockBlocks Drum School, a free, stepwise course where each lesson adds one new idea to the one before it. The previous lesson, “Add the Kick,” covered add the bass drum to create basic rock beats. Next is Lesson 5, “Syncopate the Kick.”
Two 8th notes are equal to one quarter note. We count this 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &. In this beat the kick lands on beats 1 and 3 and the snare lands on 2 and 4. If playing the beat is hard at first break the beat down into little piece. Say 1 & and play the hats on 1 &. And play the kick on 1. Then play half the beat. Play hats on 1 & 2 &. Kick on 1 and snare on 2. Notice how that's really the whole beat and that it just repeats twice to make a full measure of 4/4? Make the tempo slower, try it in stacks, and view the sheet music.
